Tommy Chong Reunites with The Shades

Before Cheech and Chong and before Bobby Taylor and the Vancouvers, Tommy Chong played guitar in a counterculture band from Calgary called The Shades.  When they played back in the 1950s, hoodlums would come out to see their show. The police chief even wanted The Shades to leave town.

This Sunday, The Shades with MC Tommy Chong will be reuniting for a show at Ranchman's in Calgary, Canada.  It will be filmed for a documentary about The Shades and preparing for the reunion.

www.cheechandchong.com is DEAD. Welcome to Cheech and Chong Fans Dot Com!

The site I created....The site that got Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong back together is gone.  Ownership has been switched over from me to them (by bureaucratic force).

And they didn't even put something on the new site.  The domain is just parked.  I guess Live Nation and the lawyers couldn't get their shit together in time.

Cheech and Chong Dot Com is DEAD!  Welcome to the real deal, Welcome to Cheech and Chong Fans Dot Com!

Goodbye Everyone!

Today is my last day as owner of Cheech and Chong Dot Com.  It was a great ride and a lot of fun over the years. I enjoyed interacting with fans and keeping fans informed.

It's shame that certain people were blinded by fame and fortune and didn't do the right thing.  Cheech Marin spearheaded the effort to take the domain from me, but Tommy went along for the ride.  It's strange because both Cheech and Tommy didn't object to me promoting their gigs over the past 10 years.

Two years ago, Cheech didn't want to be associated with Cheech and Chong.  He wanted nothing to do with drugs.  He objected to my having banners pointing to sites with "marijuana alternatives."  Cheech had his soon-to-be wife tell me, "i think the content of that advertising is a bit problematic for cheech's team. personally when i first googled cheech your site came up, but when i saw the home page i turned it off. the content of your site is much higher level and quality then you can assume when you see that ad for the first time. may be chong doent's mind it since he maintains more or less his old image, and though cheech can still do stand up easily, he has become so much more diverse, think of it-he is a hollywood actor, major art collector, golfer and now has a doctorate degree."

Life's about Karma so who knows what fate has in store for them.

See you on my new site www.cheechandchongfans.com.

Tommy & Shelby Chong Interviewed by Arizona Daily Star

The Arizona Daily Star interviewed Tommy Chong and his wife, Shelby, who were promoting their upcoming show at the Desert Diamond Casino.

When asked about Cheech and Tommy, Shelby said "They're old and they're crabby, what can I say?"  Then, Tommy interrupted her, "But we're rich."

Tommy went on to say, "It's fun on the road, but it's more fun not being on the road. I don't know what goes faster, your life when you're working or your life when you're not working. It goes by pretty fast."

Updated: Thanks for all your Support

I wanted to thank everyone for their support.  I've received thousands of emails from disgusted fans, reacting to the video I posted this morning.  Many had their own personal stories to share.

Read the comments on youtube.  They are very interesting.

By the way, one of the comments was left by ToughJewdotcom. ToughJewdotcom is Matthew Sugarman of wwllp.com….He's one of Cheech and Chong's many attorneys.  I found out who owned toughjew.com by going to networksolutions.com, clicking on "whois," entering "toughjew.com."  It's right there in black and white.

His comment is:
"You've only heard Ryan's side of the story not Ceech and Tommy's. Please keep that in mind. I know for a fact that Ryan was offered a very generous deal for the purchase of the website, but turned it down. ONLY when Ryan turned down the offer (that was reached after MONTHS of negotitations) did Cheech and Tommy file the case to have the domain name taken away from Ryan.

This could have worked out much much better for Ryan had he not been so greedy."

Yeah, he "knows for a fact" because he's one of the orchestraters. There was nothing generous at all about any of the proposals.  You can read all the udrp legal docs if you want. I'm all about freedom of information.

**Update: Their attorney, Matt Sugarman aka youtube's ToughJewdotcom, deleted his comment and account. He posted his comment under his new screen name, davesnothereman22.

Bad News for Cheech and Chong Fans

Cheech and Chong recently won cheechandchong.com from Ryan Tracy. Ryan Tracy, Mr Weedmaster, has owned and operated the site, with Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong's blessing, since 1998. Only after reuniting, did they pursue gaining ownership of the domain. Rather than working out a deal, they bullied him. Ultimately, they opened a domain dispute with UDRP and won, leaving it's former owner high and dry.

On December 1st, ownership of cheechandchong.com will be transferred to Cheech and Chong. Ryan Tracy will move the site to www.cheechandchongfans.com.

In this video, Ryan, explains some of the details of the bullying by Cheech and Chong's lawyers, agents and managers.

These legal documents provide additional insight into the ordeal including personal emails. Email addresses have been blacked out for privacy reasons.

If you have any additional questions, email goodbye@cheechandchong.com.  This email address will be active until December 1.

Comedy & Pop Culture Icons Cheech & Chong Confirm 2010 North American Tour: Cheech & Chong: Get It Legal

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Comedy visionaries Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong announce their 2010 North American Tour, Cheech & Chong: Get It Legal, partnering with the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) to promote policy change through laughter. The Live Nation-produced tour will kick off on January 16, 2010 in Boulder, Colorado at the Macky Auditorium. Tickets for this must-see comedy tour of the year go on sale in select markets beginning at 4:20 p.m. on November 20, 2009 at LiveNation.com.

Cheech & Chong: Get It Legal is the follow-up to their hugely successful reunion tour, Cheech & Chong: Light Up America, where they performed together for the first time in over 25 years. The pop culture duo performed for more than 100 audiences and quickly became one of the most sought after shows of 2008-2009. Additionally, their performance in San Antonio, Texas was filmed by the Weinstein Company and will be released as Cheech and Chong's: Hey Watch This on 4/20 of next year.

"We had an amazing time last year reconnecting with each other and our fans in a way that felt like it was part of our DNA, we were meant to be together," said Cheech Marin. "In 2010 we are looking forward to doing more classic material that people haven't seen for years and years, performing more of our songs and introducing some new bits. We've had material brewing separately for the past 25 years," said Tommy Chong.

The Cheech & Chong: Get It Legal tour is scheduled to make 17 stops across North America including Boulder, Indianapolis, Baltimore, Bellingham, Portland, Santa Barbara, Tampa, Minneapolis, Rockford, Detroit, Louisville, DC, Bakersfield, Phoenix, and Fort Worth with Canadian stops in Regina, and Saskatoon. Additional dates to be announced soon. Chong's wife and comedy partner, Shelby Chong, will open all dates on the tour as well as DJ-Joey Mojo.

Successful beyond their wildest dreams, Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holds-barred comedy routines. Together, they represent a lifestyle and are the originators of the "stoner film" as a genre. Their phenomenal success included nine hit comedy albums and eight hit films, breaking box office records, shattering comedy album sales, garnering multiple Grammy nominations and mesmerizing fans for more than a decade.

Because of the recent attention surrounding the laws in respect to marijuana, Cheech and Chong decided to name their upcoming tour "Get It Legal" in order to raise awareness for this important topic. By teaming up with a marijuana policy reform group such as MPP, Cheech and Chong are fusing comedy and activism as a means of bringing attention to the harm caused by marijuana prohibition and the urgent need for different, more sensible marijuana laws. "Want to make a change? Come to a Cheech and Chong show," says Tommy Chong. "It's time to get it legal, before it's too late."

Mary Beth Buchanan Resigns

Bush-appointed U.S. District Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan will finally leave her job on November 16. The U.S. District Attorney is SUPPOSED TO leave when a new President is elected. However, she initially refused to do so. She was a hard-core right winger who carried out Bush's anti-drug agenda.

Tommy Chong, Josh Gilbert and Congressman Frank Talk Pot

The web site True/Slant interviewed the legendary Tommy Chong, a/k/a Tommy Chong Director, Josh Gilbert and Congressman Frank about the government and pot.

Among other things, Tommy says “I don’t think it is the government’s business to tell you how to spend your leisure time.” He goes on to say that the pot laws "are all corrupt. The DEA and the Justice Department create a criminal organization that’s licensed to take over someone else’s property. It’s like bouncers at a night club who start a fight so that they can keep their jobs."

According to Josh Gilbert, “So many U.S. agencies have a stake in [pot's] illegalization. The DEA’s budget is 80 percent marijuana.”

It's a great article.

Sony to Distribute Machete

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group has acquired most international distribution rights for Robert Rodriguez's "Machete."

Seven Questions for Cheech & Chong...Cheech & Chong to Launch New Tour

LAist got to interview Cheech & Chong who were promoting tonight's VH1 special, Lords of the Revolution: Cheech & Chong.

Cheech points out an interesting coincidence. In their film Corsican Brothers, "I burn down the house and then we try to get our way back home. I go one way. He goes the other way. We end up meeting 20 years later. That's what really happened to us in our careers."

Chong says the key to their longevity is the film Up In Smoke. "The movie's a lot like a joint. It takes you on a timeless journey. We're timeless. We aren't driven by fads, we are a fad. A fad that will never go away. No matter how many bitchy reviewers would like it to go away."

When asked if Tommy got his a/k/a Tommy Chong DVDs back [The interviewer is referring to the DEA raid on Spectrum Labs, the company distributing the a/k/a Tommy Chong DVDs. Note: we have the DVDs in stock], he said "No. The government keeps everything. They destroy everything. The movie was a big hit, it was shown on one of the cable networks and was big with the critics."

Cheech also says they are going to launch a new tour.

It's a great interview. Read the entire thing here.

When Cheech was asked if pot should be legalized, he responded "I think it'll be legalized sooner rather than later. It's a key towards our economic recovery."

When Tommy was asked who plays the best stoner in a movie, he responded "I like David Chappelle ('Half Baked') and definitely Seth Rogen ('Knocked Up' / 'Pineapple Express')."

Cheech, who got married to Natasha Rubin, this past weekend, said he's leaving later today for their honeymoon.

Review: Tommy Chong's Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography (Paperback Edition)

The paperback edition of Tommy Chong's book, Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography, will be released August 4th. Simon and Schuster were kind enough to provide us with an advanced copy to review.

When Tommy wrote this book, he and Cheech were still broken up. No one would have guessed that at this time last year Cheech and Tommy would announce they had buried the hatchet and would reunite for a tour.

In the paperback edition, Tommy adds a postscript chapter explaining the initial meetings he had with Cheech last year to discuss a reunion. Many of these meetings turned into arguments. Tommy details these meetings and arguments, as well as what it was like going back on tour with Cheech. It's very interesting and provides an inside glance at what went down behind-the-scenes.

Cheech Won't Be in Machete

One of the best and most underrated films of all time was 2007's Grindhouse. The film, which was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez, was a double-feature inspired by the low-budget grindhouse films of decades past.

During the "intermission," fake movie trailers were shown. The most popular trailer was Machete. It stars Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin. Cheech Marin is Trejo's gun-toting priest vigilante brother. Memorable quote..."God forgives, I don't."

Rodriguez and Trejo frequently hinted that a full-length Machete film was in the works.

Well, Machete begins filming in two weeks and Cheech is not in it. The film which will be directed by Ethan Maniquis and Robert Rodriguez will of course star Danny Trejo. However, the script was not sent to any of the original cast, not even Cheech.

Rodriguez says they are sending it to "big names," but would only confirm that Michelle Rodriguez has signed.

He also says that Jonah Hill (as Julio) and Lindsay Lohan (as senator's daughter) are considering the script. The rumor is that Robert Dinero (we believe as Cheech's priest character) has already signed.

VH1 and VH1 Classic Premiere New Five-Part Week-Long Iconic Series 'Lords of the Revolution'

NEW YORK, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- They trafficked in sex, drugs, music, and subversive politics. They held peaceful protests and violent insurrections. They were the leaders of the most significant cultural transformations of the 20(th) century. From political heavyweights like the Black Panthers to cutting-edge cultural trendsetters like Andy Warhol's Factory crew to Harvard professor turned psychedelic advisor Timothy Leary -- they questioned authority, celebrated nonconformity, and dared to be different. VH1 Rock Docs premieres a new 5-part series "Lords of the Revolution" beginning on Monday, August 10 - Friday, August 14 at 8pm* airing on VH1 and VH1 Classic. Narrated by Richard Belzer, each hour-long episode of "Lords of the Revolution" celebrates the counterculture icons of the '60s and '70s -- the legends who defied the social, political and cultural mores of their time including: Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali, The Black Panthers, Timothy Leary, and Cheech and Chong.

Edgy, colorful, and visually dynamic, each hour long episode of "Lords of the Revolution" features rare archival footage and photos as well as new first-hand accounts and interviews including (to name a few), Betsey Johnson, Lou Reed, Bobby Seale, Sally Kirkland, James Cromwell, George Foreman, and Perry Farrell -- all combined to tell the compelling, dangerous and subversive stories of a revolution that continues to influence popular culture today.

"Lords of Revolution" Episodes include:

MUHAMMAD ALI AIRS ON MONDAY, AUGUST 10

In an era defined by protest and turbulence, perhaps nobody captured the attention of America in the late 1960s more so than Muhammad Ali. As heavyweight champion, Ali electrified the sports world with his sharp tongue and showmanship for flair. But out of the ring, his conversion to Islam and defiant refusal to fight in Vietnam thrust him into the center of a blistering political controversy. Ali never backed down and gave a voice to black America that helped galvanize the civil rights movement. He also fueled the anti-war movement, inspiring young adults to question the government and speak out. He spoke his mind freely, defended his religious beliefs with vigor, and willingly accepted the consequences of his actions, which later cost him his title and license to box.

CHEECH AND CHONG AIRS ON TUESDAY, AUGUST 11

From the moment they broke onto the scene in the early 1970's, Cheech and Chong began redefining comedy. At a time when drug culture was still considered taboo, they boldly emerged from a cloud of pot smoke with a brand of humor that both championed and lampooned stoners everywhere, much to the chagrin of the establishment. A string of successful comedy albums and relentless touring established the duo as "the rock-n-roll comedians" whose popularity continued to soar as stoner culture seeped into the mainstream. Suddenly, there were head shops everywhere and by 1977 President Jimmy Carter was in favor of legalizing marijuana. Then came Cheech and Chong's first film, Up in Smoke, which became an instant classic, immortalized by pot smokers to this day, and launched a successful Hollywood career for the comedy duo as they continued the marijuana crusade until their breakup in 1985.

THE BLACK PANTHERS AIRS ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 12

In the late 1960s, there were few radical groups more controversial than The Black Panthers. Led by the dynamic personalities of Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and Eldridge Cleaver, the Panthers boldly challenged white America to deliver justice and opportunity for all. Armed with guns and clad with berets and leather jackets, the Panthers advocated self-defense; initiated social service programs nationwide; and became a defiant symbol of Black Power. They also become a target as the FBI and police waged a bloody war to bring the party down.

TIMOTHY LEARY AIRS ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 13

From the moment Harvard professor Timothy Leary ate magic mushrooms in 1960, his life would never be the same. Advocating the use of LSD and other mind-altering drugs to expand consciousness, Leary transformed himself from an eccentric Harvard professor into the leader of the 1960s psychedelic counter-culture movement. Leary's influence helped shape the music, fashion and politics of a new generation. He defied authority and fought the government at every turn, earning the title, in President Nixon's words, as "the most dangerous man in America."

ANDY WARHOL AIRS ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 14

From 1964 - 68, Warhol's factory on East 47(th) Street provided a social arena for collaborative experimentation. Warhol developed an eclectic network of associates that spanned the worlds of poetry, fashion, film, photography, art, music and the drug culture. Speed freaks, drag queens, musicians, poets, superstars, fashion beauties, and avant-garde artists helped shape a scene unique in American history at a time when Warhol produced some of his most revolutionary work.

"Lords of the Revolution" is the newest entry in the Emmy Award-winning VH1 Rock Doc franchise. VH1 Rock Docs are feature-length documentaries that tell unique stories of artists and music from a wide range of genres, styles, and musical perspectives.
