Cheech Marin Joins ‘Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day’ Reimagination In Recasting

Cheech Marin (Shotgun Wedding, Champions) has been cast in the Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day reimagination following George Lopez’s exit due to a scheduling conflict.

He will portray Gil, the patriarch of the Garcia family and a comedic character who rides a motorcycle.

From writer Matt Lopez and director Marvin Lemus, Alexander tells the story of 11-year-old Alexander Garcia (Thom Nemer) who thinks he has the worst luck in the world. When his family sets off on a road trip to California, he’s pretty sure disaster awaits at every corner. His anxiety only increases when a family secret is revealed.

The film also stars Eva Longoria, Jesse Garcia, Paulina Chávez and Rose Portillo. Production is currently underway in New Mexico.

Alexander 2, a new take on Judith Viorst’s book after a 2014 movie starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner, is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Lisa Henson.

Bent Paddle teams with Cheech and Chong to sell THC seltzer

Bent Paddle Brewing Co. is collaborating with old-school stoner duo Cheech and Chong on a new line of hemp-derived THC drinks.

The Duluth brewery debuted the new Cheech and Chong beverages within its taproom on Thursday — 4/20, the unofficial holiday for cannabis enthusiasts. It'll also be distributed to retailers and dispensaries.

Taking place during the launch event are a screening of Cheech and Chong's cult classic "Up in Smoke," plus a never-before-seen video of the comedians trying their new drinks, a munchies bar by Happy Hippy Tacos and tunes from DJ Stephanie Michelle.

Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong recently united their individual, existing cannabis brands under one banner, Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co., according to a profile on the pair by Leaf Magazines.

"We're thrilled to partner with Bent Paddle Brewing Co. to bring our Minnesota fans a new way to enjoy cannabis," Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co. CEO Jonathan Black said in a statement. "These beverages are the perfect way to celebrate 4/20 and enjoy a relaxing, delicious drink."

The new Cheech and Chong beverages contain 5 milligrams of hemp-derived THC and come in four flavors: Raspberry Highball, Magic Mule, Citrus Sunrise, and Grapefruit Twist.

"We're honored to work with Cheech and Chong on this co-manufacturing project," said Bent Paddle Brewing Co. co-founder Laura Mullen. "The flavors Cheech & Chong selected are out of this world and we are very proud to be part of their process.”

Cheech and Chong Biopic in the Works With Hidden Pictures

It's in The Hollywood Reporter today so I guess it's happening.

Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures is partnering with Marin and Chong, Underground and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment on a feature biopic about the comedy duo.

Kristian Mercado, who most recently made his feature debut with the 2023 South by Southwest entry If You Were Last, will direct from a screenplay by Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan.

“We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy and made cannabis mainstream!” said Marin and Chong.

The documentary a/k/a Tommy Chong did a great job detailing Cheech and Chong's history.  We recommend checking that out first.

Cheech and Chong Working on Three Films

At this week's SXSW festival, Cheech revealed there are three Cheech and Chong films in the works.

1. Documentary about the comedy team

2. Biopic about their early years that would star other actors as them

3. Straight-up Cheech & Chong comedy about the two characters as old men

Our take on this...

1. The doc was done by Chong's daughters after the success of Josh Gilbert's a/k/a Tommy Chong.

2. Biopic will never get made.

3. No major film studio will put up the money for a Cheech and Chong film.

Tommy Chong Hosting Denver's Mile High 420 Fest

The Mile High 420 Festival has booked the biggest boss of them all, with Rick Ross set to headline the annual cannabis celebration in Denver's Civic Center Park, according to the event's new organizer.

Waka Flocka Flame, The Alchemist, Fivio Foreign and Kaash Paige round out the headlining musical acts, while Tommy Chong will be the official host of the 4/20 fest, set for Thursday, April 20. More acts will be announced soon, the event website notes.

As in previous years, the 4/20 fest will be free, but this marks the first year that there will be an age limit: After receiving requests from parents and youth prevention groups last year, the organizers have ruled that no one under 21 will be allowed in.

For nearly three decades now, a marijuana celebration has taken place at Civic Center on April 20 (or on the weekend a few days before or after that date) to mark 4/20, an unofficial cannabis holiday now observed around the world. The event transitioned to a free concert and vendor space in the late 2000s, with a handful of planners and companies organizing the festival over the years — but unsanctioned marijuana use has always been a hallmark.

Cheech and Chong Working on Two Films

Cheech Marin tells Coming Soon that Cheech and Chong are working on two films. The first is a documentary created by Chong's children.  This will be released soon.

He didn't give details on the second.

However, the documentary was created after the success of Josh Gilbert's A/K/A Tommy Chong doc on Chong.

In this interview, oddly, Cheech says he enjoyed working with Tommy.  I don't know if it's the weed or the old age talking because he used to say just the opposite.

Cheech Marin to Appear in NBC's Lopez vs. Lopez

Al Madrigal is very excited about the upcoming guests on NBC’s Lopez vs. Lopez with Rita Moreno and Cheech Marin.

The two beloved and respected Latin actors are set to guest star and appear in the eighth episode of the season tomorrow night.

Moreno joins the cast as George’s late Grandma Dolores, who becomes a feisty spirit that haunts George to do right by her, one way or another. And like the traditional grandmother, she has her chancla and razor-sharp tongue to set him straight when he disobeys or argues.

As for Marin, he plays Carlos, a curandero invited to their home to rid of the uninvited spirit. As an all-knowing, all-powerful mystic, he will be the powerful conduit between the supernatural and temporal worlds. Not to mention, he’ll be a straight-shooting shaman who can diagnose the ghost and accepts Bitcoin in the meantime.

Here is the official synopsis of Episode 108:

When the Lopez home is disturbed by an evil spirit, the family enlists a curandero (Cheech Marin) who tells them the house isn’t haunted, it’s George! The ghost of his grandmother (Rita Moreno) is hell-bent on righting a past wrong and will keep throwing chanclas at his big head until he does it.
