Tommy and Shelby Chong Coming Out of BOA

Tommy Chong coming out of BOA with his wife, Shelby and Fran Lasker (who I believe is a celebrity psychotherapist).

The famous toker says he's seen the new American Idol: "Now they've got three druggies."

And while Chong still has his trademark facial hair, he says that Cheech refuses to grow his mustache back.

He says Miley Cyrus and Michael Phelps should have kids.

In reality, Tommy and Shelby were at BOA so they could promote that Shelby will be on the cover of High Times magazine. Look at me, I'm famous for marrying the guy I used to babysit for.

Where's Your Birth Certificate?

2011 Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival

TRAVERSE CITY, MI (January 14, 2011) — Following up on last year’s smash debut, the founders of the Traverse City Comedy Festival announced today the line-up for Year Two of the popular northern Michigan event, February 10-13, 2011.

“Thousands showed up in the dead of winter last year to be part of our comedy fest,” said founder Michael Moore. “They laughed so hard, we were afraid not to do it again.”

“My favorite part of last year’s fest,” recalled the other founder, comedian Jeff Garlin, “was swimming across Grand Traverse Bay with all the other comedians at midnight. This year we plan to make it all the way to Green Bay.”

This year’s festival will take place from Thursday, February 10 through Sunday, February 13. It has grown a day longer with a special opening night show featuring the amazing Bob Saget. Most will remember him as the lovable and clean cut dad of the Olsen Twins on the 1980s sitcom “Full House.” But his show in Traverse City will be R-rated and highlight the theme of this year’s fest: “Comedy is Dangerous in February.”

Other performers at the festival include one of today’s hottest comedians, Patton Oswalt, the amazing Caroline Rhea, and the man known as “The Roastmaster” on Comedy Central, Jeffrey Ross.

Jeff Garlin will host “Jeff Garlin’s Hootenanny” featuring rising-stars Aubrey Plaza and Brett Gelman. And Michael Moore will perform an original one-man show.

The festival’s Opening Night Act will be preceded by an Opening Night Party at the City Opera House. On Saturday two family-friendly matinee “Comedy4Kids” performances will be held. On Friday and Saturday nights at midnight, Jeff Garlin’s Late Night Combo Platter will return to Traverse City for FREE at Horizon Books.

A great new comic documentary, “Exporting Raymond,” will premiere, Sunday will be comic Coen Brothers day, and two classic midnight films will screen for the first time at the State Theatre.

The brainchild of Oscar-winner Michael Moore (“Capitalism: A Love Story”) and Emmy-winner Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”), the comedy festival is a volunteer-run project of the non-profit Traverse City Film Festival. All proceeds will go towards the TCFF and to the other good works the TCFF does to help create jobs and improve the quality of life in northern Michigan.

More About the Shows

While it’s true that the comedy fest’s opening night act starred on two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (“Full House” and “Americas Funniest Home Videos”), Bob Saget has also been a bawdy, edgy standup comedian for over thirty years. From his starring on Broadway in “The Drowsy Chaperone” to his scene-stealing scenes in “The Aristocrats” and HBO’s “Entourage,” to his last HBO special, “That Ain’t Right,” Bob is always pushing the envelope of his craft. Earlier this year Bob starred in the ABC prime-time series “Surviving Suburbia,” and he was just seen on “Entourage,” reprising his last turn on the popular HBO series. Bob is currently working on a new documentary comedy series for A&E, an exploration of bizarre subcultures all over the world, and this fall Bob’s new theater tour will visit cities across North America. No one under 16 will be admitted to Saget’s show.

Michael Moore has produced movies, TV series and books, and once performed regionally with the Ice Capades. So for his next act he’s decided to write and perform an original one-man show. Comedy festgoers will be the first to get a peek at this new work from Flint’s most famous Eagle Scout.

Jeff Garlin has a Hootenanny planned with the master host himself and two up and coming comedy stars: Aubrey Plaza (“Parks and Recreation,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) and Brett Gelman (“The Colbert Report,” Comedy Central’s “Motherload”).

Patton Oswalt played Spence on “The King of Queens” and has appeared on “Seinfeld,” “The Sarah Silverman Program” and “Flight of the Conchords.” He’s a regular contributor on “Real Time with Bill Maher” and Lewis Black’s “Root Of All Evil.” He has made two critically acclaimed albums including the Grammy nominated “My Weakness Is Strong.” He has also appeared in more then 20 films, voicing Remy the rat in Pixar’s Oscar winning “Ratatouille,” and starring in the critically acclaimed “Big Fan” (TCFF 2009). He headlines tours in the United States and UK.

Jeffrey Ross’s show-stopping performances at celebrity roasts honoring the likes of William Shatner, Donald Trump and Pamela Anderson inspired New York Magazine to crown him “The Meanest Man in Comedy.” Jeff has appeared on dozens of TV shows from David Letterman to “The View,” and most recently he appeared on “Dancing with the Stars.” Jeff also performs stand up regularly at charity benefits and for U.S. soldiers stationed all over the world. Jeff co-wrote and starred in MTV’s highly irreverent animated series “Where My Dogs At?” Eventually the show made so many people mad, they had to cancel it. No one under 16 will be admitted to Ross’s show.

Caroline Rhea is an integral part of New York’s comedy scene, and she has brought her fresh, smart and spontaneous approach to sold out audiences on tour in the United States and Canada regularly for the last 17 years. She starred as Aunt Hilda on The WB’s sitcom “Sabrina, The Teenage Witch.” She was in “The Perfect Man” with Heather Locklear and “Man on the Moon,” the story of the late comedian Andy Kaufman co-starring Jim Carrey. She was host of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” and Drew’s girlfriend on “The Drew Carey Show.”

And two of the fastest rising stars on the comedy circuit will split a show: Ted Alexandro (David Letterman, Comedy Central specials — and he tours with Louis CK) and Joe DeRosa (HBO’s “Bored To Death,” Fox New’s “Redeye”).

The festival is excited to announce that Traverse City Comedy Arts Festival attendees will be among the first audience to see a great new documentary that follows two-time Emmy-winning writer Phil Rosenthal, creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond,” in an incredibly funny true story of the attempt to translate “Raymond” into a Russian sitcom. It’s a true international adventure, the kind of comedy that can only exist in real life, where the Fruit of the Month Club can’t be the Fruit of the Month Club.

The festival’s Opening Night Party will feature festivalgoers enjoying appetizers and cocktails with a who’s who list of comedians and VIPs, all of whom will mingle and answer the inevitable question, “What do you think of the warm spell we’re having?”

On Friday and Saturday at midnight, the lower level of Horizon Books will become a free after-hours comedy club with Jeff Garlin doing his famous “Late Night Combo Platter,” hosting a number of surprise guests. These free events will not be ticketed — we’ll let in the first 100 or so people who line up.

On Saturday afternoon, families will be happy to hear that Comedy For Kids will be back. It’s interactive, hilarious, different every time, clean, fool-proof, fast-paced, positive and fun improvisational comedy for the entire family. The audience votes on what is funniest, and volunteer kids from the audience can play along. Grandmas, moms, dads and kids all left giving it high fives last year, so we’re bringing back the best ComedySportz players from around the country to Traverse City.

The festival will feature several films, including the dark comedy classic “Heathers” starring Winona Rider and Christian Slater to kick things off late Friday night (“Did you have a brain tumor for breakfast?”) — just $3 or two for $5. And Saturday late night, the State Theatre is playing “Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke.” On Saturday morning, we’ve got a 25 cent kids comedy matinee (title to be announced). And on Sunday, we’ve got four Coen Brothers comedies: “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” “Fargo,” “Raising Arizona” and “The Big Lebowski.” Day passes are $10, or each film is $5.

The complete schedule will be released on Friday, January 21. Venues for the comedy festival will include the State Theatre, the City Opera House, the Old Town Playhouse and Horizon Books.

Tickets go on sale Sunday, January 30 at 9 am online at comedyartsfest.org and in person at the State Theatre. Live performances are reserved seating. Family events and movie are general seating. Line numbers will be handed out on Saturday, January 29 from 5-9 pm to those who would like to come Sunday morning to purchase tickets in person, but online is the best method, and line numbers are not required. Wheelchair accessible seating is available by phone at 231-947-3446.

The comedy fest continues to be a volunteer-run event, like the film festival, and local donors and sponsors will be asked to help cover expenses. Tickets will range in price from free to $30 for headliner tickets, so that everyone can afford to participate.

Update: Tommy Chong is NOT a Member of NDP

In his youtube video earlier this week, Tommy Chong claimed he had joined NDP so he could support Canadian candidate, Dana Larsen.

However, NDP says Chong is not a member of NDP and is in fact a citizen of the United States.

I think this is a case of Tommy Chong wanting to get as much press as Cheech Marin whose film, Machete, was released on DVD this week.

Tommy Chong joins BC NDP to support Dana Larsen

Tommy Chong, famed Canadian actor, comedian, author and musician, has joined the BC New Democratic Party and endorsed Dana Larsen for party leader.

"I joined the BC NDP for one reason, and that is Dana Larsen," said Chong in a statement accompanying a video released today. "Dana is a candidate who has honesty and integrity. He's not your typical politician, he represents the real grassroots of this province."

I guess this politician must be pro-pot and/or Tommy wanted to get some press coverage for himself.

Cheech Marin Makes Another Attempt at a Sitcom

In what would be be his first comedy series gig in almost 20 years, Cheech Marin is set to co-star on Fox's half-hour pilot Outnumbered.

Inspired by the BBC sitcom, Outnumbered, which is being directed by Larry Charles, revolves around one set of parents Sue (Ana Ortiz) and Pete (Cliff Chamberlain) who are often overwhelmed by their three children. Marin will play Sue's dad, who is taking a pharmacopoeia of prescription pills and believes that sometimes the kids could use a good swat. Marin's only major previous comedy series gig was his role on the Golden Girls spinoff The Golden Palace. The Nash Bridges alum recently did an arc on ABC's Lost and co-starred in Robert Rodriguez's Machete.

"Larry wrote a fantastic script," said MRC TV topper Keith Samples. "Everything fell into place; it had a karmic feel to it. Kevin loved the original and loved what Larry did with the adaptation."

An unbroadcast pilot has been made and further scripts have been written. The pilot will be broadcast, but a date has yet to be given.

Some fast facts:
Golden Girls was a horrible sitcom and a horrible failure.  It aired on CBS.
Larry Charles was set to direct the Cheech and Chong reunion film which was written by Tommy's daughters.
New Line Cinema, the film studio, scrapped the film after Tommy was arrested.
Larry Charles left the project to do Borat, a huge success.
Larry Charles wrote for Curb Your Enthusiasm and Seinfeld.
Cheech's last attempt at a sitcom was Fox TV's The Ortegas.
Fox kept postponing the show because it was terrible.  Back then, most shows on Fox were terrible so this was really terrible.
The Ortegas was originally an NBC show, but they decided they didn't want it.

Legendary Album Cover Design Studio Unlocks Archives to Offer Works from their Amazing Portfolio to Art & Music Fans World-Wide

Portland, OR (PRWEB) December 1, 2010

In the early 1970s, no album cover design agency in the U.S. was hotter than Pacific Eye & Ear. Started in 1972 in Los Angeles by designer Ernie Cefalu after stints on Madison Avenue and with album cover designer Craig Braun, PE&E was built around a team of incredibly-talented young artists who brought the agency’s clients music packaging designs that captured the hearts and eyes of music lovers worldwide and built a portfolio of images that, to this day, are considered amongst the most-iconic of all time.

Who doesn’t remember the first time they saw Aerosmith’s Toys In The Attic, or Alice Cooper’s Billion Dollar Babies? Black Sabbath’s Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or the 3-D lenticular image on the cover of Captain Beyond? PE&E’s range of work was simply astounding and the talents of each of the associated artists (Drew Struzan, Ingrid Haenke, Bill Garland, Joe Garnett, Carl Ramsey, as well as Cefalu himself) would soon translate into their own success and/or fame after the agency disbanded 13 years later. In particular, Cefalu would go on to create greatly-admired campaigns for a wide variety of clients both in and out of the music business, while Struzan would gain world-wide attention for his theatrical posters for block-buster movies such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Muppets, Harry Potter and many others.

Now, for the first time in over 30 years, some of the best-known works from the PE&E archives are available for sale to music fans and art collectors worldwide as part of the Original Album Cover Art collection (http://www.originalalbumcoverart.com). Over 250 original works of art are offered – original paintings, drawings and sketches – as well as a series of limited-edition fine art prints derived directly from the original works in this archive.

In November, 2010, PE&E/OACA released the first five items in what will be a growing portfolio of highly-desirable album cover art prints. With production overseen by Cefalu himself, these prints are produced using only the best materials in order to enhance the visual impact of each of the images. Each finished print in both the unsigned ("Standard") and artist-signed ("Signature") editions is hand-numbered and stamped with the PE&E Corporate seal to ensure authenticity. Each print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity (a work of art in itself, featuring sample images from the collection), also signed and stamped by Ernie Cefalu.

The first five prints now available include –

Aerosmith’s Toys In The Attic – the cover of the band’s triumphant 1975 release features an illustration by Ingrid Haenke;

Alice Cooper’s Alice At The Palace – the promotional image for an un-staged Broadway extravaganza that was to have been produced in 1972. It features an "Alice as Medusa" image created by Joe Garnett and additional graphics by Drew Struzan and Ingrid Haenke;

Alice Cooper’s Greatest Hits gatefold cover – this St. Valentine’s Day Massacre-themed image by Drew Struzan and Bill Garland was featured on the front cover of the band’s 1974 Greatest Hits package;

Captain Beyond’s Captain Beyond – a collaborative effort (painting by artist Joe Garnett, lettering by Ernie Cefalu) was used as part of a 3D "lenticular" album cover for this band’s 1972 debut recording;

Jesus Christ Superstar Angels – The package for Rice/Lloyd-Webber’s ground-breaking rock musical featured these angels, recreated here in stunning detail by their creator, Ernie Cefalu.

When thinking about the labor of love that produced this collection of images, Ernie looks back in wonder at his timing and good fortune – "Early in my career, I was sent from New York to LA to open the West Coast Satellite office of a creative agency. It was with this company that I conceived and designed the original Rolling Stones Tongue logo, Cheech & Chong’s Big Bambu, Grand Funk Railroad’s E Pluribus Funk and Alice Cooper’s School’s Out album cover designs and packaging. In 1971, I started my own company, Pacific Eye & Ear, which became a main player in "the golden era" of album cover art.

As a young designer, I had the honor and privilege of working side by side with many great, emerging artists. For 13 years, as Pacific Eye & Ear’s Creative Director, I was the creative thread that linked together some of the world’s top illustrators, designers, writers and photographers. It was a luxury for an agency to have even one good illustrator in your arsenal, so imagine having Drew Struzan, Ingrid Haenke, Bill Garland, Carl Ramsey and Joe Garnett all at the same time! That’s what I call, real illustration muscle!

I am so happy to finally be able to offer some of these works to collectors and am truly humbled and honored to have received so much positive feedback about this effort from fans all over the world. I’m also happy to have found a kindred soul in RockPoP Gallery owner Mike Goldstein, and I am eager to work with Mike and the dealers he selects to promote these editions and help them find good homes!"

Goldstein adds – "After meeting Ernie during an interview I did with him about his career, I was amazed to find out that he’d never produced fine art prints of his works. As someone who has made it his mission to advance the appreciation of album cover art and artists in the fine art world, I knew that it was simply a matter of time before I’d take that final step beyond simple reseller to become involved first-hand in a print publishing effort. You can only imagine how lucky I feel to have been able to help Ernie, Drew and the rest of the PE&E team realize their dream to bring the fruit of their labor to art collectors and fans of album cover art worldwide!"

Upcoming Releases – Upon completion of production, PE&E/OACA will also be releasing additional titles, including Alice Cooper – Billion Dollar Babies and Welcome To My Nightmare, Black Sabbath – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Bee Gees – Main Course and Iron Butterfly – Scorching Beauty (with more to come). These titles all feature the art/ illustrations of Drew Struzan.

Retail pricing for the current editions is as follows (all prices quoted in U.S. Dollars):
