Software Company Creates a Cheech and Chong App which No One will Want and Won't Get Approved

This press release came out today.  A mobile software company paid Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong to use their likeness in a mobile phone app.

We see multiple problems with this:
1. No one wants this app because most Cheech and Chong fans are sixty years old and don't have a smart phone.
2. Cheech and Chong had awesome films in the 70s and 80s, but let's face it, they are has-beens.
3. There's no way Apple will approve a drug-related app.

MEDL Reaches a New High in Mobile With Cheech and Chong
The Grammy-Award Winning Counter-Culture Legends Partner With MEDL Mobile to Bring Their Fans the Biggest, Fattest App Ever

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Jan 24, 2012 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- MEDL Mobile, Inc. MEDL, a leader in mobile apps development, announced today that they have partnered with Richard "Cheech" Marin and Tommy Chong of the hugely successful comedy duo Cheech and Chong to create the first official mobile app based on their comedy and brand. The app will be a "super app" full of smaller apps designed to appeal to their fans, including today's younger generation who have embraced their counter-culture comedy some 40 years following the duo's start in the early '70s. The app is slated for soft launch in early 2012 and full launch on April 20, 2012, or "4/20."

Cheech and Chong are widely known and still celebrated for their 1970s and 1980s cult classic films and stand-up routines largely based on the hippie and free love era and their personal love for cannabis. In 2008 they launched the historic reunion tour entitled "Light up America and Canada" followed up by 2010 & 2011's "Get it Legal Tour" and have confirmed production of a new animated film hopefully to be released in 2012.

"You can't really have much more fun than this. The app is being codenamed 'The Blimp' and it's going to be jam packed with games, how-to's, and tools for fans -- not to mention the world's greatest clock," said Dave Swartz, MEDL Mobile co-founder and chief creative officer. "Given the popularity of Cheech and Chong and the loyalty of their following, I think this should be one of our most widely downloaded apps yet."

About Cheech and Chong

Successful beyond their wildest dreams, the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong defined an era with their hilariously irreverent, satirical, counter-culture, no-holds-barred comedy routines. Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong's phenomenal success began on the stand-up comedy circuit which led to nine hit comedy albums and eight hit films, breaking box office records, shattering comedy album sales, garnering multiple Grammy nominations and mesmerizing fans for more than a decade.

With nine albums released from 1972 through 1985, Cheech and Chong were nominated for four Grammy Awards, winning the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album with their third album, Los Cochinos, released in 1973. Big Bambu, their second album, was the biggest selling comedy record of all time in 1972 and remained so for many years. Their stunningly successful comedy streak transitioned to film in 1978 with their first movie, "Up In Smoke," the highest grossing comedy of 1978, topping $100 million at the box office. Cheech and Chong co-wrote and starred in a total of eight feature films together, all directed by Chong.

Radio Show Goofs on Cheech Marin

On Thursday, Cheech Marin was on the Gordon Keith radio show promoting his awful sitcom, Rob. The hosts got on Cheech's nerves. First, they didn't know that the show had debuted the previous week. Then, they said the show, Lost (which Cheech was on), should have also had Tommy Chong on it.  That really pissed Cheech off.  The true personality of Richard Marin briefly emerged.

Cheech got very silent because Cheech can't stand Chong. He's only touring with him for the money. Cheech has multiple alimonies and lawyer bills. He is going through a nasty divorce. Plus, there are allegations of spousal and child abuse.  The last thing he wanted to hear was that Chong should have been on Lost.  Cheech never liked playing second fiddle to Chong.

The last time this radio show interviewed Cheech, he hung up. I guess his publicist forgot about the experience and let Gordon Keith interview him again.

Cheech Marin Voted off Celebrity Cook-Off

Sunday night, Cheech was voted off of the Food Network's Rachael vs. Guy Celebrity Cook-Off. His porterhouse steak butter just wasn't up to snuff. This was episode 3 of the series. Lou Diamond Philips, Mario Fantone and other celebs still remain.

Rob = Robbed Me of 30 Minutes of My Time

We are huge Rob Schneider fans, but tonight's debut of the Cheech Marin/Rob Schneider show, Rob, was horrendous. Typical stereotypical humor we've heard many times before. It's the worst show since Cheech was on the Golden Girls spinoff, Golden Palace.

However, the actor, Eugenio Derbez, was fantastic.

Critics agree:

David Arquette To Host LA Art Show Party For Charity

The LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary, The Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic & Traditional, and the IFPDA Print Fair will kick off with a high-profile Opening Night Premiere Party on Wednesday, January 18 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Hosted by actor and The Art of Elysium supporter David Arquette, proceeds from the Opening Night Premiere Party will enable The Art of Elysium to expand its program to bring arts to critically ill hospitalized children and increase the number of school children who visit the Getty through the J. Paul Getty Museum’s Education Department program for Title One School visits.

With more than 5,000 patrons in 2011, the Opening Night Premiere Party and the Los Angeles Art Show has consistently drawn attendees who love art, including museum patrons, political dignitaries, collectors, celebrities, and supporters of arts education, including Halle Berry, Olivier Martinez, Finola Hughes, Russell Young, Shepard Fairey, Kat von D., Cheech Marin, Councilman Tom LaBonge, Chinese Consul General Qiu Shaofang, Executive Director of the DCA Olga Garay and Gayle and Ed Roski. With live performances, installations, and curated exhibitions, the 2012 Opening Night Premiere Party promises to be an exciting evening of art and culture.

The Opening Night Premiere Party will feature an exclusive re-creation of The Myths of Rape, by Elana Mann and Audrey Chan, working with Leslie Labowitz-Starus and Lacy, re-creates a 1977 performance by Labowitz-Starus, originally performed as part of Three Weeks in May. These compelling performance tableaux, typical of 1970s activist street demonstrations, reinforce how activism and interventions are as relevant today as in the past. This unique event is part of Three Weeks in January, a new work by Suzanne Lacy presented by LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) as part of the Pacific Standard Time Performance and Public Art Festival.

A special installation that evening by artist and iconic musician from DEVO, Mark Mothersbaugh, will feature an interactive sculpture of two Scions fused together. Visitors can go inside the sculpture and listen to music. The LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary will offer a ‘first look’ at the sculpture installation before they are showcased at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles.

A portion of the proceeds from the 2012 Opening Night Premiere Party ticket sales will be donated to The Art of Elysium. Through The Art of Elysium programs, volunteer artists have the opportunity to work with children, adolescents and families in both small and larger group settings for 90-120 minutes in various inpatient and outpatient medical environments. The Art of Elysium provides a wide range of fine and performing arts workshops and activities designed to help children cope with the difficult emotional challenges of illness and hospitalization, promote opportunities for growth and development, encourage socialization, and provide exposure to various artistic skills and disciplines. The Art of Elysium’s programs for hospitalized youth include Fine Arts, Fashion Design, Music, Media/Theatre Arts, and Arts-Based Self-Esteem Programs.

Proceeds generated from Opening Night Premiere Party ticket sales will also support visits for students from Los Angeles area schools to the J.Paul Getty Museum, through the Museum’s fully subsidized Title One bus transportation program. This program ensures that as many students as possible from throughout Los Angeles can visit the Getty and experience its collection and the site through guided and self-guided visits and architecture and garden tours. Each year, more than 100,000 students and their teachers visit the J. Paul Getty Museum at its two locations. These visits provide young people the opportunity to have direct experiences with original works of art.

LA Art Show: Modern & Contemporary, The Los Angeles Fine Art Show: Historic and Traditional and the LA IFPDA Fine Print Fair will take place on January 19-22, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, West Halls A and B, 1201 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015. The 2012 Opening Night Premiere Party will take place on Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 7pm-10pm, with a VIP Patron reception beginning at 6pm. Tickets are $125 and $500.
