Lionsgate Scores The Perfect Game

LIONSGATE, the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, announced today that it has acquired worldwide distribution rights, excluding Mexico, from High Road Entertainment to THE PERFECT GAME, the true story of a scrappy Mexican Little League team that became the first non-American team to win the league's World
Series.

The film is directed by William Dear from a screenplay by W. William Winokur, and is produced by David Salzberg, Christian Tureaud, Mark Koch, Daniel de Liege, Winokur and Michael Gallant. The film stars Clifton Collins, Jr. (CAPOTE, "Thief"), Cheech Marin (CARS, BORN IN EAST L.A.) and Academy Award(R) winner Louis Gossett Jr. (DADDY'S LITTLE GIRLS, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN). The film's original score is by Academy Award(R) winner Bill Conti (ROCKY, THE RIGHT STUFF). The announcement was made today by Lionsgate's President of Theatrical Films Tom Ortenberg.

"THE PERFECT GAME belongs to the classic tradition of real-life sports films that are fundamentally about persistence and heart," said Ortenberg. "It fits squarely with the Lionsgate mandate to bring uplifting, quality fare to America's diverse families."

"We're thrilled to have Lionsgate as our partner on THE PERFECT GAME," commented producer and HighRoad Entertainment President, David Salzberg. "The Lionsgate marketing and distribution teams have an unsurpassed record of creating awareness and anticipation of movies like ours, so we know we are in the best possible hands."

The deal was negotiated for Lionsgate by Ortenberg, Wendy Jaffe, Executive Vice President Legal & Business Affairs, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Jason Constantine, Executive Vice President of Acquisitions and Co- Productions, and Eda Kowan, Vice President Acquisitions; and for the filmmakers by HighRoad Entertainment's David Salzberg and Christian Tureaud and Bill Grantham, Esq. of Greenberg Traurig.

SYNOPSIS
In 1957, a barefooted, rag-tag team of boys from poverty-stricken Monterrey, Mexico defy extraordinary odds to become the first foreign team to win Little League World Series - doing so in a perfect game, the only one in championship history. Based on a true story, THE PERFECT GAME tells the tale of how their miracle changed not only their lives, but an entire city's destiny.

Interview with Jade East from Up In Smoke

411mania conducted a great interview with Zane Buzby, the actress that played Jade East, the sexy stoned-out redhead hitchhiker Cheech and Chong drove "all the way" in Up In Smoke.

She showed up hours late for the Up In Smoke audition in Malibu because, being from New York, she had no idea where she was going. She improv'd most of it, talking about people she knew from New York. This improv (remember her rambling to herself?) was actually used in the film.

To prepare for the role she went to The Roxy and studied how people from The Valley dressed and behaved.

She has some great stories about John Ritter, Jerry Lewis and more.

Update: BREAKING NEWS...Spectrum Labs Raided by Feds...all a/k/a Tommy Chong DVDs Confiscated

WE TOLD YOU THEY DIDN'T WANT YOU TO SEE THIS DOCUMENTARY!!!

The FBI has raided Spectrum Labs, the company that partially owns and is distributing the film a/k/a Tommy Chong. The raids occured Wednesday night at their office in Newport, Ohio.

Spectrum Labs' primary business is selling detoxification products.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Congress held hearings on detox products back in 2005. The founder of Spectrum Labs, Matt Stephens, was subpoenaed, but he pleaded the fifth. Congress was unable to pass legislation on detox products.

They confiscated all the remaining 10,000 of the DVDs possibly because Tommy Chong is not allowed to profit from his conviction (wrongful conviction).

"I'm not profiting off the story of my first amendment violation at all," said Chong.

The fact that another company which doesn't sell the dvds was also busted seems to indicate that it may be primarily related to detoxification products. However, the feds are being tight-lipped.

Cheech Attends Kidney Foundation Golf Tournament

Cheech Marin, Ray Romano, Joe Pesci, Andy Garcia and more attended the first annual National Kidney Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank, California. The event was hosted by George Lopez who received a kidney transplant from his wife in 2005.

Everyone was joking around and having a lot of fun.

The best quote was from Cheech...
"George is my best bud...It’s very important for him, the kidney foundation, and it also wipes out 150 hours of court mandated community service for me, so everybody wins."

A long long time ago, there was this young musician, Bruce Springsteen, who was trying to make it big. His band's first gig was opening up for Cheech and Chong.

Earlier this week, Bruce told this story on stage in Charlottesville, Virginia. He recalled that during their set, someone tugged on his shirt with the message, "Cheech says it's time to get off the stage."

Maybe, Tommy Chong will talk about this in his new book, Cheech & Chong: The Unauthorized Autobiography, which will be released this August.
