Lucky Lehrer Hosting Fundraiser and Awareness Campaign at the Legendary Whiskey a Go Go in West Hollywood, CA

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Oct. 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Marijuana has been used as an agent for achieving euphoria since ancient times; it was described in a Chinese medical reference traditionally considered to date from 2737 B.C.  As one of the most studied and tested substances of all time, marijuana was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia from 1850 until 1942 and was prescribed by doctors to treat a variety of conditions.

Under current California law, it is generally illegal to possess or use marijuana.  On November 8 California voters will decide Prop 64, which legalizes the recreational use of marijuana in California.   Exactly one week before the election on November 1, Lucky Lehrer, iconic punk/harcore drummer and Flipside Magazine's best punk rock drummer of all time, is pleased to be hosting a "A Celebration of the Music of Mary Jane" at the Whiskey A Go Go in West Hollywood from 8:00 pm till 12:30 am, and invites the general public to the event.

Lehrer's foray into the politics of marijuana started in 1974 while working for a freshman congressman on Capitol Hill.  Arguing against the aerial spraying of the defoliant Paraquat on the front page of the student newspaper at the University of California Lehrer observed "the nation's policy on cannabis appears inconsistent and ill advised."

Performances will include jams by a growing list of luminaries that includes band members of Quiet Riot, Pink, Ozzy Osborne and plenty of others. There's going to be some surprise guest stars, Lehrer hints, because "you can't imagine the number of celebrities that feel passionately in favor of Prop 64." Lehrer is no stranger to the limelight as a founding member of the seminal punk rock group The Circle Jerks, and later with Bad Religion and The Darby Crash Band. "It's great coming back to the Whiskey, the kind of venue where most of us got our start, and feel the club's support at an important time," Lehrer states.

So far as theme music, there's no lack of songs for Lehrer's list of musical celebrities to perform including Jimi Hendrix' The Wind Cries Mary, Along Comes Mary, by The Association, I'm in Love With Mary Jane by Rick James, Smoke Two Joints in the Morning by the Toyes (later covered by Sublime), Reefer Head Woman by Aerosmith and, of course Led Zeppelin's Goin' To California and Sweet Leaf by Black Sabbath.

Who can forget One Toke Over The Line by Brewer & Shipley and Neil Young's famous Roll Another Number?  Then there's The Joker by the Steve Miller Band ("some people call me a space cowboy….") and You Don't  Know How It Feels by Tom Petty.  There's loads of references to marijuana in hip hop, including Doctor Dre's The Next Episode and lots of other songs, some of which we'll perform on November 1 at the Whiskey, Lehrer smiles and says.

The free event also features comedian, actor and writer Cheech Marin (Cheech and Chong).  There will be outstanding performances from a host of great performers. According to Lehrer, "you can't imagine the number of celebrities that feel passionately in favor of Prop 64" and there is never a better time to celebrate the music of Mary Jane than now.

Cheech and Chong Documentary in the Works

Cheech Marin says there's a Cheech and Chong documentary in the works.

Filmmaker, Josh Gilbert, created one of the best documentaries I've ever seen titled a/k/a Tommy Chong.  The doc is brilliant and comprehensive.  It includes lots of unseen interviews and television show appearances.

Shortly after its release, Tommy and Shelby started working behind the scenes with the investor to win ownership of the film Josh created.  Litigation is ongoing.

In the meantime, Tommy Chong decided to create their own.

Cheech Developing Sitcom with Paul Rodriguez

I guess Cheech Marin and Paul Rodriguez are friends again.  They previously had a beef about not being paid for a comedy DVD they released.

They're working on a TV sitcom.

Cheech hasn't been able to get a show on the air since Nash Bridges.  He's shot a number of pilots which were just awful.

Cheech Marin Autobiography to be Released in 2017.

On March 10, 2017, Richard Cheech Marin's autobiography, Cheech is Not My Real Name...But Don’t Call Me Chong, will be released.  This isn't Cheech's first book.  He's written children books and books about Chicano art.

Man Who Created Cheech and Chong's Big Bambu Album Cover

Merry Jane caught up with Ernie Cefalu, the artist who created iconic album covers for artists such as The Doors, Earth Wind & Fire, Jefferson Airplane, Aerosmith, the Bee Gees, Quincy Jones, Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath, Rolling Stones and Cheech and Chong.

The article, among other things, discusses how he created the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers cover.

Regarding the Big Bambu album cover:
Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong loved it so much, that they went back in the studio and recorded an additional skit with a giant joint. The funny thing is two years ago when I was working on Alice's box set, I ran into Cheech Marin at an event. Rob Zombie was there. Cheech Marin was there to give a check to a charity organization. I looked across the hall, and Cheech Marin came out. He looked at me quizzically “Don't I know you? Oh yeah. You did the cover to Big Bambú! That album sold an extra 100,000 albums because of the cover that you did!!” He shook my hand, and said “I must sign... two of these a week.”
Ernie is now in the cannabis industry with his King Klone Brand.

Tommy Chong Disrespected by Bernie Sanders

Presidential contender, Bernie Sanders, has long welcomed the support of marijuana advocate Tommy Chong.  In fact, Tommy, who turns 78 tomorrow, was scheduled to speak at today's Bernie Sanders rally in East Los Angeles.

However, Bernie got cold feet and uninvited Chong just hours before the rally.
“Now I’m going to look like a fool, like one of those guys who starts bragging about something that isn’t true," Tommy says.

Tommy is trying to play it cool on social media, but he's upset.

Bernie is just another phony politician.

Cheech Marin's Stupid Interview with NY Daily News

Cheech Marin has been making the rounds in New York City promoting his mezcal, Trez Papalote. According to Wikipedia, it's a distilled alcoholic beverage made with agave.

The Daily News spent some time with him.  There's no article, just some corny video where they have staffers constantly interrupt this supposed interview.  It's as if the Daily News is desperately trying to get this video to go viral.  It's not funny at all.

CHCI Announces 39th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Theme and Events

CHCI Announces 39th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month Theme and Events
WASHINGTON, DC - The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI), the nation's leading Hispanic leadership development and educational services organization, today announced the theme Educate.Engage.Vote for its 39th Annual Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM) celebration in Washington, D.C. on September 13-15, 2016. CHCI hosts the nation's premier events commemorating HHM, which draw more than 3,000 Latino and national leaders from across the country and thousands of live stream viewers from across the globe, to its Public Policy Conference and Annual Awards Gala.

"The year 2016 represents an amazing opportunity for the Latino community to make its voice heard and wield an incredible amount of influence on the future direction of America," said Rep. Linda T. Sánchez, CHCI Chair. "That's why this year's conference theme and events will focus on how American Latinos are engaging in the political process and ensuring they are represented at the highest levels when decisions are made that affect our community. When we translate our growth in numbers into political, cultural and economic influence, America wins."

CHCI will honor renowned actor and entertainer Cheech Marin and Anna Maria Chavez, chief executive officer of Girls Scouts USA, with its Medallion of Excellence Awards in recognition of their accomplishments, leadership and outstanding service to the Latino community at CHCI's 39th Annual Awards Gala on September 15, 2016. The event is the largest gathering of Latino leaders in the country.

Cheech Marin, primarily known as an actor, director and performer, is familiar to many as one?half of the hilarious duo Cheech and Chong; together, they made eight feature films. He has since appeared in more than 20 films and numerous television shows. In 2005, Cheech directed the Broadway production of Latinologues, a collection of comedic and poignant monologues revealing the Latino experience in America.

A third?generation Mexican American, Cheech has received numerous awards for his work on behalf of Latinos, including the 2000 Creative Achievement Award from the Imagen Foundation and the 1999 ALMA Community Service Award from the National Council of La Raza and Kraft Foods.

In 2007, he received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts for his contributions to the creative arts from Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, and received the inaugural Legacy Award for Arts Advocacy from the Smithsonian Latino Center. He serves on the boards of the Smithsonian Latino Center and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.

Anna Maria Chávez began her career journey in the very same movement she now leads: Girl Scouts. A lifetime member of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and an award-winning community leader, Anna developed the leadership skills growing up as a Girl Scout in Eloy, Arizona, that would propel her to the office of the chief executive of GSUSA.

Anna's experiences in Girl Scouting lit a passion for public service and social engagement that have defined her educational and career paths. Her desire to make the world a better place led her from her hometown to Yale University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in American history before pursuing a juris doctorate at the University of Arizona. She has since been admitted to the Bar of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, the Arizona Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Anna's interest in serving others brought her first to Washington, DC, where she held numerous posts in President Bill Clinton's administration, including senior policy advisor to former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater. She later returned to her home state of Arizona to serve as deputy chief of staff for urban relations and community development under then-Governor Janet Napolitano.

CHCI kicks off its 2016 Hispanic Heritage Month events with its annual Public Policy Conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on September 13-14. This year, CHCI Chair Rep. Linda Sanchez will be joined by Congressional Hispanic Caucus members, administration officials, and national experts and scholars to participate in timely discussions of major policy issues affecting the Latino community.

The closing and premier event of the week is CHCI's 39th Annual Awards Gala. This prestigious dinner recognizes CHCI's highest honorees and celebrates the outstanding accomplishments of Latino leaders who are giving back to their communities. The Gala draws more than 2,000 guests including federal and local elected officials, corporate and nonprofit leaders, and celebrities.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated annually from September 15 - October 15. For CHCI, it also represents an opportunity to feature its highly competitive and nationally acclaimed Latino youth leadership development programs, including two fellowship programs, a congressional internship program, scholarship-intern programs, and college readiness programs, Ready to Lead (R2L®) and R2L® NextGen, for high school students.

About CHCI
