Here's a collection of reviews.

Hollywood Reporter

Exhaustive account of the comic pair's career while doubling as a road-trip comedy.

The filmmaker has uncovered a wealth of vintage clips and archival footage, including priceless scenes of the pair being interviewed at the Playboy Mansion, complete with nude women swimming in the grotto behind them

They bitterly recount how Adler screwed them over and that they made only $2,000 and a tape recorder for the film. Despite that, they’re still on cordial terms with Adler, who briefly shows up in the film when they amusingly spot him walking in the desert and give him a ride.

Their low-key chemistry and obvious affection for each other despite their past issues are still very much on display, delivering a nostalgic kick that you don’t even have to be high to enjoy.

Indiewire

The two remember different versions of the same events, and depending on who’s telling the story, the other half is inevitably portrayed as the malefactor.

“Last Movie” spends most of its runtime recounting in painstaking detail the entire Cheech and Chong history

Some of the footage feels redundant or unnecessary.

Tommy betrays plenty of egotism on his part when he insists he needed full creative control with every successive film and Cheech never quite got over being marginalized in the act.

Grade: B-

Daily Texan

Though they don’t come to a concrete agreement on what happened that led to their professional separation, they ultimately agree to not focus on the unimportant issue, and that their friendship prevails.

5 out of 5, man

Austin Chronicle

Clocking in around 2 hours, Cheech and Chong’s Last Movie is a tad lengthy with its very detailed timeline, but it held the audience’s attention anyway.

I wish the film spent less runtime on a goofy script and more on creativity and external sources explaining their lasting impact on film and cannabis culture.

Roger Ebert

I wished that “Last Movie” simply had more comedy material in it—the balance is sometimes off between how Cheech & Chong got famous when the film could have used a little more why. They were ahead of their time in SO many ways, comedically and culturally, which makes the fact that “Last Movie” feels stuck in the ‘70s and ‘80s all the more disappointing.

From the editors:

After all these years C&C won't fess up and tell the whole truth regarding the breakup and how their wives were involved.
The Weedmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09026520132157698759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32893221.post-65889188425490073002024-03-12T18:34:00.007-04:002024-03-12T21:51:38.201-04:00Watch Cheech and Chong's Last Movie Red CarpetToday, KSAT broadcast live from the SXSW premiere of Cheech and Chong's Last Movie. margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">

Here are some highlights:

Director David Bushell, whose producing credits include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Dallas Buyers Club, initially approached Marin and Chong with an idea for a narrative feature. When that reunion film didn’t pan out, Bushell has a realization: “No one had made the definitive documentary.”

Bushell counts 9,000 high-res images collected for the doc. He remembers, “We found stuff in someone’s storage locker that was [an interview] from the late 70s on 16-millimeter film all in garbage bags.” There are other revealing longform interviews with Playboy in the ’80s and one with a pre-Fox News but equally mustached Geraldo Rivera.

Production filmed Marin and Chong driving through the desert in a vintage car two hours outside of Los Angeles near Joshua Tree National Park.

Halfway through Jackie Martling's podcast, Chong asks Jackie's stage name. In other words, the name he uses when he does stand-up. Jackie tells him he and Chong were in the film, Pot Luck, together (no recollection). Jackie tells him he was the writer on the Stern show when Cheech and Chong did the Jesus sketch (no recollection).

Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co., together with NorthEast Extracts, is bringing their pioneering product philosophy and focus on terpene-modulated experiences to the Empire State. This innovative approach allows Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co. to offer users a precisely tailored experience with their products, simplifying the product selection process for consumers at all levels of cannabis knowledge.

Joey Marin, Chief Product Officer of Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co., explained: "In the cannabis consumer's mind, there is a lot of focus on the indica or sativa classifications, which are becoming obsolete with increased product education. We try to go deeper than that when it comes to our products. We focus on expressing the importance of terpenes, the aromatic compounds in cannabis that contribute to the flavors, scents, and more importantly, the effects. By crafting products based on terpene profiles, it's not about just picking a strain; it's about choosing the kind of experience you want."

NorthEast Extracts, recognized for its dedication to quality and innovation, aligns seamlessly with Cheech & Chong's product philosophy. Together, they are putting the power in the hands of consumers, allowing them to choose products and experiences that align with their unique preferences and desires. New Yorkers can now curate their cannabis journey, selecting precisely the terpene-driven experiences they seek.

Cheech Marin expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating: "Bringing Cheech and Chong's Cannabis to New York is a dream come true. Our partnership with NorthEast Extracts is not just about products; it's about creating a cannabis community that embraces diversity and caters to everyone's unique preferences while being accessible."

Tommy Chong emphasized the importance of accessibility, stating: "It's not just about coming to New York, which is amazing by itself. It's about doing it our way, the Cheech & Chong way, which means something for everyone. We want to give an amazing experience to everyone who seeks one."

Eric Lundquist, Founder of NorthEast Extracts, commented on the collaboration, saying: "Our partnership with Cheech and Chong's Cannabis Co. is a win-win for New York. By joining forces, we're delivering outstanding products and cultivating a sense of community and shared passion for cannabis, and no one knows cannabis better than Cheech & Chong."

Together, NorthEast Extracts and Cheech & Chong are looking to ignite a cannabis revolution for New Yorkers. They are dedicated to empowering individuals by making cannabis more accessible, allowing the plant to take center stage in creating a community-engaged cannabis experience in the heart of the Big Apple.
The Weedmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09026520132157698759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32893221.post-6596922831722182262023-12-09T23:33:00.010-05:002023-12-09T23:33:52.611-05:00Amazon Cuts Ties with Riverside’s Cheech Museum
Amazon has reportedly ended its financial support for the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture in Riverside, California, after the institution included an artwork that the company deemed critical of its business strategy in Southern California’s Inland Empire.

The news was first reported earlier this week by the Los Angeles Times. Just days after the article was published, Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and executive chairman, who has recently become a high-profile collector, was spotted at Art Basel Miami Beach, one of the country’s leading art fairs.

Amazon’s decision to cut ties with the Cheech was revealed in a leaked document laying out several of the company’s business and PR strategies for 2024. It was posted to X (formerly Twitter) by Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, the chief officer of the California Labor Federation, AFL-CIO and a former California State assemblyperson.

The L.A. Times was able to independently verify the authenticity of the document, and an Amazon spokesperson did not dispute its veracity to the paper.

Amazon spokesperson Jennifer Flagg told ARTnews that the L.A. Times article was a “blatant mischaracterization of Amazon’s work, and in fact, Amazon is proud to be engaged philanthropically in communities across the country.”

The document reads, “We will not continue to support organizations that did not result in measurable positive impact in our brand and reputation. Additionally, we will not fund organizations that have positioned themselves antagonistically toward our interests.”

It cites the Cheech as one example because a 2023 exhibition, titled “Life Logistics,” included triptych of screenprints by Toni Sanchez, a student at the University of California, Riverside studying political science. The three prints show an Amazon warehouse with flames beneath it; surrounding the warehouse are block letters reading “BURN THEM ALL DOWN.”

In an email to the Inland Empire–based newspaper the Press-Enterprise, Sanchez said that the work “stems from the fact that we are tired of not being heard from city officials who vote on and approve warehouse building. We need them to listen to us community members when we tell them what we want from them and how we want the land to be used, whether that’s for community parks, community gardens, anything but warehouses.”

Amazon had given a $5,000 donation to the Cheech in both 2022 and 2023. But going forward, the company said it would no longer be providing anymore money because “the artist then gave an interview expressing hostility towards Amazon.”

The Cheech opened in 2022 after the Riverside Art Museum, which manages the center, secured a gift from actor and ARTnews Top 200 Collector Cheech Marin from his collection of Chicanx art, which has long been considered the largest in the world. It has been popular with the local community and tourists, and well-received by critics. The museum said that it had a goal of getting 100,000 visitors in its first year, and that it had surpassed that goal by 30 percent.

The Cheech also had major support from the City of Riverside, which has agreed to give $800,000 annually to the institution for its budget for its first decade of existence. The city council also helped secure $10.7 million from the California State budget that went toward retrofitting the historic building in which the Cheech is located. At the time, Marin told ARTnews of Riverside’s potential, “I think it’ll be the next big art town. It’s set up to do that.”

Riverside Art Museum director Drew Oberjuerge confirmed to the L.A. Times the amount of the donations from Amazon, but said she first learned about Amazon ending its donations from the leaked document.

“Neither payment was designated for an exhibition, and the company has not communicated any questions or concerns about an artwork or requested the return of its donations,” Oberjuerge said in a statement. “We believe in supporting artists and curators who challenge, surprise, delight, annoy and anger. It’s through this dialogue we better understand our shared experience.”

Speaking to ARTnews in 2021, ahead of the center’s opening, the Cheech’s artistic director María Esther Fernández said, “When you think about Chicanx art, it comes from a political movement that was concerned with social justice and issues of equity,” she said. “You can’t have a center that’s focused on this kind of art without thinking locally. It’s important to understand its roots in community.”
The Weedmasterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09026520132157698759noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32893221.post-6007207527217858722023-11-28T20:32:00.002-05:002023-11-28T20:32:33.644-05:00Cheech says there are Two Cheech and Chong Films in the Works
During his interview with VLADTV, Cheech Marin said there are two Cheech and Chong films in the works that were held up by the writer's strike.

There are no working titles. Cheech says they wait until after the film is finished before naming them.

Production will continue in the new year (2024).

Note to readers: They have said this before. It's interesting and well worth the watch.

He talks about the breakup with Tommy and so on. No mention of Cheech's alleged marital issues.

In episode 13, Cheech says he has no recollection of 2013's Cheech and Chong's Animated Movie. We don't know if he's being sarcastic because the film was horrible. Cheech and Tommy each got paid $100k. Tommy was quoted as saying it's the biggest check he and Cheech ever received. People like the legendary Johnny Fratto bankrolled this disaster. I believe it was created by friends of Chong's son, Paris.
